Nickel is in fact an element which, when alloyed with copper, gives us nickel silver, also known as German silver. Its light colour made it more preferable to silver platers of the Victorian era, as wear and tear were less noticeable.

It is strong and hard-wearing, although stamped or formed items can crack or "perish" after many years of use.
